Wednesday has come around again and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.
Kayd halted within the keep’s doors. The commander paused at the opposite end of the courtyard and scowled in Kayd’s direction.
Kayd bowed jauntily.
Waving off his followers, the commander stalked across the yard. His escorts snapped to attention, but the commander remained focused on him.
“What are you doing here?” the commander demanded.
Kayd raised his bound hands in response. The commander’s eyes narrowed. Wearied and but not angered.
“Again?” He shook his head. “This must be…”
“The tenth time I’ve been arrested?” Kayd supplied helpfully. Ten times and he’d yet to bother learning the man’s name. How impolite of him.
The man turned from Kayd to his escort. “His crime.”
“He flicked a burnt crust Stenamin had–”
The commander growled. “A burnt crust? That’s all?”
“But Steamin make them–”
“I don’t care!” the commander bellowed. “There isn’t a sweet which compensates for –”
The door thudding open interrupted the commander.
Kayd didn’t turn toward the arrival. Min heavy cane thunking on the cobbles confirmed her presence. As did the commander’s drooping shoulders.
“You took my boy!” Min wailed. The commander grimaced as the wizened woman tottering her way past Kayd.
Kayd watched the predictable situation unfold. Min demanded his release. The accusations and counter accusations. The citizens drawn by the ruckus. Their predictable outrage at poor Min’s mistreatment.
Predictable. Expected. As expected as Kayd’s release and the shadow slipping past the distracted guards.
