Find a Way

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: They had to get along

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Drew had never understood the escape room craze. She supposed that was part of the territory since a majority of her life functioned like one. Now, trapped in one with Reed, her opinion did not change one whit.

“Well, what about those?” Reed gestured at the bookshelf. “Moving books often triggers hidden doors.”

Drew gazed across the shelves and the myriads of thin volumes comprising the heavily lined shelves. “Do you have any idea how long–” Stopping, she pulled her head back slightly, appraising the situation again. Trying them all would keep Reed occupied for a bit. “Go right ahead.” She waved her hand dismissively. He was already yanking them before she’d turned away. No doubt in no practical order.

She doubted the bookshelf was the answer. They’d made this room anything but obvious. Every step forward had been at the expense of minutes adding into hours she couldn’t afford. Every solution involved both of them. Whoever had designed this room wanted to ensure they had to get along. A nearly impossible feat.

“Oh, come on! It’s got to be this one,” Reed, already frustrated, said. Drew glanced long enough to see the remains of his haphazardly pulling books. His latest attempt proved as futile as the rest.

Drew sighed heavily, they had to get along to get out. They had to get out to save Tricia. Pressing her lips thin, she knew she’d have to find a way.
