Tears

He opened the door to find her standing there, crying.

What is WonHundred Word Wednesdays? It’s when a group of amazing authors and I write 100 word stories all based on the same short prompt and post them. All the variations are fun to read. Here is my entry for the week.

He set the magazine aside telling himself there hadn’t been a knock. He’d invented the wisp of sound. It wasn’t another of those guests, again.

A vain thought. He opened the door to find her standing there, crying. Even translucent, she appeared more real than under the emergency light’s glare.

“Why?” Her voice was hollow echoes. “Why did you abandon me?”

“I didn’t.” Leaning against the door, his remaining energy dissipated. “I did what I could.”

“But I’m alone.”

His hand moved before his brain recalled reality. She was another ghost he couldn’t comfort. Another life he’d failed to save.

Don’t forget to read the other’s takes on the prompt. Theirs go up throughout the day.
