Time Stop

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: It is late morning on the old wall clock

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Karris stood by the wall again. Its long, flat surface stood unadorned, except for a single clock. The clock, a remnant of the old world, remained forever stuck on late morning. Trina sighed watching him, wishing he wasn’t as stuck as the clock.

“Karris.” Her voice held brusque swiftness. Even her tone didn’t cause him to stir today. “Karris, it’s time to go.”

“Time?” He snorted carrying with it his derision of the concept. “What is time?”

Trina raised her hand and rubbed the back of her neck, annoyed. Not this conversation again. “The fact that I’ll be in trouble if I don’t get you there,” She resisted adding on time.

Karris turned from the clock and appraised Trina. No doubt he debated if her comfort was worth the hassle of going. She clenched her jaws tighter, trying to maintain her smile as she awaited his decision which would make or break her day.

Stuffing his hands in his pockets he shrugged. “Why not, I haven’t got anything better to do.”

Tension drained from her muscles, and Trina turned from him, striding toward the door. She pulled it open and waited for him. Neither inside nor outside, Karris paused and looked at her. “You need to stop letting time control you.”

“I’ll get on that. Tomorrow.” She quirked up a corner of her mouth, expressing she understood the triteness of her words.

He was in a good mood today. He simply nodded, turned, and hurried from the room.

Trina secured the door behind him, locking away the last clock. The device which had recorded the last second. Together they hurried toward the council to debate an issue that had no tomorrow nor today.

What was time when time had ceased? Time was avoiding yet another lecture.
