The Girl with Star Fall Hair

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: She was still recognizable as his high school bully

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

“Do you see her?” Vale nudge Tanth.

Tanth squinted through the club’s pulsing lights. “Where?”

“There. Right there.”

Tanth scratched behind his ear. “The star fall hair girl?”

Vale stiffened as she turned toward them. “Yeah, her.”

“Never seen her before.” Tanth shrugged. “Come on. This is the final party, man.”

“But… but…”

Vale surrendered. He wouldn’t convince Tanth. They’d known each other since their first memory. They’d known each other when Deirda had made his life unlivable.

Star fall hair may have distracted, but Vale recognized her eyes. Those eyes still made her recognizable as his high school bully.

Tanth slapped the table, which rang to match the song before he pushed away. “I’m going to dance,” he announced and sauntered off.

Vale twisted about watching Tanth delve into the crowd, quickly disappearing. A part of him wanted to join Tanth. To disappear and get lost in the night. The last night.

Another part couldn’t relax though. No knowing that Deirda was also on the station. She shouldn’t have been.

Vale screamed when a hand tapped his shoulder. Twisting, he saw Deirda with the same mocking smile he recalled. “What do you want?” he yelped.

“More what do you want,” she said. “Such as more nights?”

Opening his mouth, Vale wanted to protest the preposterousness. She couldn’t end the station.

Could she?

He thought back to the years when she’d weaseled into whatever she wanted and couldn’t doubt she would. But why? He didn’t think he’d like that answer.
