She’ll Hate It

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: She has no idea how much she'll hate it

Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Demisa stared at her daughter. Had Dierdre truly just proclaimed her desire to leave this life behind? Did she truly wish to journey to Brashavn and join the guild? No, she couldn’t.

Demisa turned away, pinching her forehead between thumb and forefinger. “I must have misheard you, daughter. You could not have made that request.”

“I did, mother. Though it is not a request.”

“What was that?” Demisa spun back, staring at Dierdre wide-eyed. Not a request? Demisa headed their family. “Such foolishness can’t be anything other than a request. One I deny.”

“Your approval doesn’t matter, mother.” Dierdre folded her arms. “I will go to Brashavn. I will be joining the guild.”

“No.” Demisa doubted her daughter’s obedience with the defiant glint in her eyes. Dierdre could not go. She had no idea how much she’d hate it.

Once, Demisa had been a part of the guild. She’d left it behind and knew the toll it took on a soul. Floundering within her release’s terms, Demisa searched for a way to dissuade her daughter.

She could say nothing.

Dierdre stared silently for a moment. Shaking her head, she turned and stalked toward the living chambers.

“Set a guard around her chambers.” Demisa glanced at her captain. Bowing, he departed to comply immediately.

Only Dierdre would disobey her, but even their fervent loyalty would not stay her daughter. Demisa crumpled, burying her face in her hands. She mourned the empty room she’d find in the morning.
