Seeress

I want to be there when you get what's coming to you

Wednesday has come around again and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Kevanth grudgingly noted that even in defeat Nadrith presence commanded. She walked straight backed and chin high. Even her arms seemed casually angled together. Only the heavy manacles dragging on her wrists spoke the truth.

He’d won. Finally.

His narrow grin pulled his eyes as the guard behind her yanked her to a stop.

“Kevanth.” She spoke simply, without anger, without fear. For a moment he missed the fire from their last meeting. Then she’d raged predicting his doom for following Tradril. He’d called her friend then, known her well, and now her calm masked emotions he couldn’t decipher.

Shaking the thought away, Kevanth stepped forward and circled her, humming deeply. “Nadrith, I’d call you the great seeress, but…” He waved his hand dismissively. “Your prophecy appears backwards.”

Moving only her head, Nadrith looked at him squarely. “I’ll be in your power but a moment.”

Raising a finger, Kevath tapped her arm. “True, true. You’ve an appointment to keep at dawn.” He slid his finger across his throat.

Nadrith stepped serenely past him and into the waiting cell. Only as the door shut did emotion crossed her face. She grinned with feral eyes. ”I will to be there when you get what’s coming to you.” The words echoed the promise of long ago.

Kevanth stepped back as the locked clanked into place shuddering against a sudden chill. The guards turned to return to their station. Hand darting out, Kevanth grabbed the closet’s arm. “Move her execution up to midnight.”
