Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.
Trev didn’t have time for this. He could hear the explosions and guns rattling within the bunker’s depths. His eyes stayed fixed on the ceiling, wishing he was out there instead of stuck in here with a dead ride.
“How much longer.” Trev spun back toward the mechanic and his co-pilot. The mechanic was doing her job at least, only half visible with her torso stuck into the guts of his ride.
His co-pilot, Drew, read in a nearby chair. “I’d wagered about a minute less than when you asked a minute ago,” Drew glanced up from her book. “And there’s nothing either of us can do to speed it up.”
“How can you relax.” Trev threw his hands out helplessly. “We have to be out there.”
“And we will be. As soon as our ride’s fixed,” Drew closed her bopok and dropped her feet from the table. Rising, she walked over to Trev and clutched his shoulder. “No amount of pacing is going to change that we have to wait for now.”
Trev knocked Drew’s hand from his shoulder. “I can’t just wait.”
“You can’t do anything but wait,” Drew said with an edge of frustration.
“Your ride’s done,” the mechanic cut over Trev’s counterargument. Turning, he saw the mechanic slam closed the panel on their ride and step clear.
“Done?” Drew and Trev said together. Drew with excitement. Trev confusion.
“Yeah, done. Did you want to get out of here or what?” The mechanic hooked her thumb at the cockpit, waiting for them to dive into the now humming machine.
“Uhh,” Trev managed to get out ineloquently. Darting forward, he muttered thanks and opened the cockpit. He glanced back long enough to see Drew and the mechanic standing together.
“Some thanks,” the mechanic muttered.
Drew shrugged. “He just can’t decide if you’re a priest or an auto mechanic.”
The mechanic grinned. “Depends whose altar you pray at.” With that, the woman strutted away, leaving Drew open mouthed. His co-pilot collected herself and rushed over. “Not a word, let’s just get back out there.”
Trev grinned and slid back into his seat. It was time to fight.
