Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.
Examining the network of roadways, Andreena believed herself mad. The overpass went under the highway. Her mind couldn’t comprehend how. She felt like she stared at a twisted painting, looping on itself.
Her passenger wasn’t helping matters.
“The gas,” Duant said. Andreena tore her gaze from the vista to stared at Duant numbly. “The pedal on the right. Push it. We go.” He gestured forward with both hands.
Andreena snorted. “I know how to use a car.” The words sounded more defensively than she preferred.
“I couldn’t attest to that.” Duant crossed his arms.
Andreena turned toward him, breathing deeply to not scream. He’d belittled her constantly since showing up, uninvited, to inform her, she had to run or die.
The hail of bullets had convinced her then. Now… Harrumphing, she shifted the car into gear. From his continuing grumbling, not quickly enough for Duant.
Andreena tensed, focusing her attention on the road. Only the road. Not the overpass rapidly approaching and morphing before her eyes.
Andreena’s stomach twisted. Closing her eyes she screamed. Her foot compressed the gas as she tensed, and they shot forward.
“Whoh!” Duant said. She relished his disquiet.
But not the speed.
Andreen hit the brake, and the car twisted coming to a halt. They were back on the other side of the overpass.
Duant slapped her shoulder. “Good job! That bought us time.”
Andreen turned toward him and scowled. Her stomach twisted, and she yanked the door opening. Leaning out, she emptied her stomach.
