Discovery

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: Everything written in purple ink

Wednesday has come around again and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Tradeen walked into the chamber to find Master Veran muttering, and wringing his hands and eased the door closed. She didn’t need speculation covering their discovery.

Crossing the room, she stopped beside Master Veran’s path. “Is something amiss?” she asked.

Veran stopped as if just discovering her. “It’s a disgrace. An utter disgrace! I can’t show them this,” he gestured at the books covering the table, “Not to the Council!” The books Tradeen had just called the council to witness.

The lost tomes of. Carendell. The Council prized those tomes above all else. Their discovery would reward Veran greatly.

And, by extension, her. Tradeen forced a smile. “But the lost tomes…”

“Are a travesty!” Veran flung his hands into the air.

Tradeen raised her hands in placation. “How?”

Veran motioned at her and hurried to the table. “Come. See for yourself!”

He opened the tome on top and turned the book to her. Vivid purple covered the page. Tradeen bit her lip. Veran would take her action as appall. Tradeen knew she did it to keep in a gasp of wonder.

The ink was beautiful. Not the respectful colors the council demanded Master and apprentices work in, but beautiful. “Perhaps inspiration struck with nothing else around?”

Veran shook his head. “Everything was written in purple.”

She blinked and glanced at the tomes covering the table. “Everything?”

Her Master nodded. “Everything.”

Tradeen sucked in a breath. Perhaps they should have examined the tombs thoroughly before she’d called the Council to witness.
