Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.
Zyndelin stood, shocked, as Redava extracted herself from the council’s review. The other Alireri, his fellow air wizards, merely shook their heads. One placed a hand on Zyndelin’s shoulder.
Taking his eyes from the woman, Zyndelin looked at the Alireri. “There is nothing to bar her entry to the city.” The man glanced back at Redava, his brows creasing. “A lack of decorum does not equal a violation.” Releasing his grip, the man departed, leaving Zyndelin and Redava alone.
Silence filled the room when the last shuffling step faded. Redava gave him an impish grin.
Stalking toward her, Zyndelin stopped a breath away. “How dare you?”
She raised an eyebrow. “I dare much. Care to be more specific?”
Zyndelin sucked, ready to scream his response. His brother’s voice echoed in his head. “Peace, Zyn.”
His words died unspoken. His brother often counseled peace when he had chased after dazzling spells.
Stepping back, he shook his head. “How do you do it? How do you convince everyone you merely a lack of decorum.”
Redava glanced sideways, frowning slightly.
“Please,” Zyndelin dismissed her despairing look. “We both know what you are.”
Redava shrugged. “Simple.” Stepping past, she shrugged unconcerned. “The key is making people think you’re controversial. Then they stop looking beyond what’s apparent.”
Halting, she glanced back at Zyndelin. “Why, if we both know what I am, did you say nothing?”
They stood silently, staring at each other. Shrugging, Redava strode from the building, leaving Zyndelin with her question.
