Never Again

“She’d be rich forever,” Malcolm said. His hand trailed over the monitor, touching her head where she sat, curled on the bed.

A gentle scoff sounded from beside him. Malcolm raised his eyes and glowered at Dunford. The man shook his head. “She’d be rich, but she wouldn’t be free.”

Malcolm pressed his lips together, stifling the scowl he wished to give his old friend. “What do you mean, ‘she wouldn’t be free’?” He flicked his fingers dismissively. “She’d be rich. She’d go anywhere, do anything she wished.”

Dunford shook his head and pulled out a chair opposite Malcom. Crossing his arms, he leaned back. “With your permission.”

Malcolm furrowing his brow. “Meaning?”

“She’d go anywhere.” Dunford paused, raising his brows. “She’d do anything she wanted.”

“Of course, I’ve the funds.” Malcom waved his hand.

“Not arguing that.” Dunford tilted his head. “But you’d let her follow any whim without input?”

“There is prudence in being advised,” Malcolm said, frowning.

“Yes, because she’s certainly appreciated your advice before now.”

“She’ll appreciate it in the future.” Malcolm slammed his fist against the table.

Dunford raised his hands then tucked them behind his head. “She’ll appreciate it, if you can advise her.”

Malcolm blinked. “If?” Twisting, he glanced at the monitor. The cell sat empty. “She’s gone.”

The door swished open. Malcolm spun back, and Dunford stood in the doorway. “What have you done?” He demanded.

Dunford grinned. “Me? I visited with a friend. Nothing more.” He turned away, laughing.
