Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.
Laughter and light drifted from the street. The sound fluttered over the eaves, teasing Dwayde with merriment beyond his reach. Always beyond. Twisting on his perch, Dwayde ran a hand over his aching muscles. What would it be like to join them for one night?
A hand smacked his shoulder, soundless and insistent. He turned to Thewyn staring at him with an eyebrow and lip twisted up. He knew that look. She’d caught a scent and meant to tease him. He tensed for what came next. “Missing something?” she whispered.
“Yeah, being able to crouch like this for hours.” Dwayde thought the comment harmless. Nothing about longing for below. And she’d been there when he’d fallen. That she should understand.
Thewyn scoffed.
So much for understanding.
“You sure that’s what pains you.” She pointed past him. The trio they’d marked were exiting the tavern. “While you think, let’s get some exercise.”
Dwayde grinned. Not that Thewyn waited for his response. She raced over the rooftops. Dwayde followed like the shadow he’d once been.
Active it proved. The chase. Her distraction. And a lifting of the lords’ purses. Including their main target, a letter crumpled in one pouch. The trio hadn’t even the time to call the guard before they’d vanished.
But the excitement passed, and Dwayde found himself longing again.
Thewyn punched his shoulder as they entered the halls. The door slid open as he scowled at her, and light and laughter pored over him. The circle welcomed them home.
