Wednesday has come around again, and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.
Alberta sprawled on the ground with a mostly unobstructed view of the night sky above her. As the snow soaked slowly through her clothing she grappled with which part of her predicament puzzled her the most. That she’d fallen over the bonnet of his car hadn’t made the list.
Mostly unobstructed because a brilliant red object obscured her view to her left. She’d fallen over Boruch’s car. Reaching out, she pressed her palm against the glossy red exterior, other than cold she couldn’t feel a speck of grim on the thing.
That fit him.
Just as falling fit her.
No one would question her ability for inexplicable happenstances. Right now, that began and ended with the car itself. It should no more be there than she should. One moment she stepped out of the training chambers, the next she’d tumbled over the thing.
“Huh,” a moderately baritone voice said. Boruch. He had a penchant for inexplicability as well.
Alberta twisted and scowled up at Boruch. He peered from the car to her, narrowing his eyes as well.
Probably trying to determine how to blame the circumstances on her. Truthfully, she pondered the reverse. Not that blame would matter if they didn’t get home.
A home which definitely did not have cars.
Boruch raised a hand and flicked a finger at her. Wincing she tried to wriggle beneath the car, but nothing happened with his gesture.
Great. Home may not have cars, but here didn’t have magic. That complicated things.
