I’ve been doing flash fiction for over 10 years now. In fact, my 11th anniversary of weekly flash fiction is coming up on June 4th. This has been an interesting journey for me because some of these stories have turned into longer stories and even some novels.

Along with friends threatening bodily harm if I don’t finish the story. I’m sure they mean well. Said with love. (I think.)

And while I am still on my journey to get my longer works edited and out (hello book one in five different universes (and some book twos)), I’m celebrating 10 years of glimpsing into my worlds with the release of 7 volumes of my flash fiction and short stories.

The first one is planned to be out on June 4th in celebration of the anniversary! Hopefully, some of you will join me in my long-term journey and check out the first volume: Glimpses: Tales Fantastic

In the ten plus years I’ve been writing flash fiction there have been characters which presented themselves and refused to shut up. Some had their universes expanded into novels. Some still bicker in my brain.

A select few are stubborn, limelight hogging individuals who demand their stories continue through flash fiction installments. This collection celebrates (or is held hostage by) the last group. These series allow me to work with set characters in a quick format, providing its own challenges.

First Challenge: All the weekly stories are based upon writing prompts. Prompts which fit a series don’t happen every day. And even as the list master, I can’t finagle the list to include more.

Second Challenge: None of these began as planned series. These characters popped out of the prompts and announced they were sticking around. Even I don’t know where (or if!) their stories will end, but they enjoy every time they are highlighted.

Welcome to volume three of the Glimpses series! Over ten years of writing weekly stories, themes emerged. Sometimes all at once and sometimes creeping back over time. This collection centers around the grim tales. Tales which journey into the shadowy side of the universes.

Even within the grim theme, the stories carry a variety. Not all endings are happy. Not all shadows are sullen. Not all heroes are victorious. But they explore when the world is sideways, the stories happening there and the depths of strength or despair.

These fit into my journey as a writer, because in fiction we want to discover what our heroes do when they are faced with darkness. My longer works (drafts of book ones in five different universes. And some book twos!), certainly have moments where the inhabitants weep, and those glimpses make the stories stronger.

We’re halfway there! I’m delighted to present volume four of the series, Glimpses: Tales from Fyretober 2021. With over ten years’ worth of flash fiction stories, themes emerged. This volume claimed a theme a bit different from the proceeding volumes. Previous entries presented tales written with specific tones or sets of characters. These stories center around a time and a challenge.

Where the stories in this collection where not written for my weekly tales, they didn’t have the normal weekly rules. Yes, they were inspired by writing prompts, but they were written as part of an event. In these tales I allowed myself more room (and less time) to create the tales. Some are longer, and some are shorter.

Sometimes, embracing a new challenge is part of the writing journey. These tales came seven years into my writing flash fiction, and they definitely provided a change of pace: daily stories. This challenge aided my longer works (drafts of book ones in five different universes. And some book twos!) by helping me to craft new ideas even more quickly.

The Glimpses series has been an adventure for me. Some turns I knew were coming. Some around-the-bends I couldn’t predict. Much like the stories in this volume, the journey here contained its share of whimsy. However, we made it, and I’m delighted to offer you volume five, Glimpses: Tales Whimsical.

This collection returns to the weekly flash fiction, exploring the capricious moments captured over the ten years. One can never tell where the journeys in these pages are headed, because whimsical moments are found in the unexpected. Sometimes the characters stumble over delightful moments of whimsy. Sometimes when engulfed in darkness, laughter helps them endure.

The exploration of humor has aided my longer works (drafts of book ones in five different universes. And some book twos!). I want my readers to laugh at times, and these stories helped me hone this aspect.

This is volume six of the Glimpses series. It’s hard to believe the series is almost done. I’ve spent over ten years writing flash fiction, with no end in sight. I’ve delighted in revisiting and celebrating my journey here. This collection, like volume four, gathers tales written over just one month of those years: October 2023 for the Fyretober challenge.

Unlike volume four, by 2023 I itched to write more. More of the tales. More depth for the characters. More conflict to explore. While some tales remained quick flashes into worlds, others grew beyond that. They demanded more space and time.

Writing longer stories expanded the Fyretober challenge from 2021 into a new experience. This year gave me a chance to practice my longer works (drafts of book ones in five different universes exist!) by embracing the tales which take more than a moment. These stories are coming.

Welcome to the final volume of the Glimpses series, Glimpses: Tales Beyond Wednesdays! The journey of bringing this series to life took years of effort and courage. I’m ecstatic to celebrate the journey here and offer a glimpse of what lies ahead.

All seven volumes gather stories I wrote and shared over ten years. This collection, however, brings together the tales I wrote and shared because I chose to. Not for weekly prompts. Not for a special challenge. Stories I wanted to share.

While this is the final volume of this series, this is not the end. This is a celebration of twelve years of writing weekly flash fiction (which I will continue into the foreseeable future). These stories added to my storytelling skills by helping me refine aspects of my craft. However, the stories I create go beyond these volumes. I cannot wait to begin sharing those worlds (drafts of book ones in five different universes!) with you.
