Offer Perilous

Author Jenna Eatough's Flash Fiction Story from writing prompt: They could see rocks tumbling past

Wednesday has come around again and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Moyra glanced toward the bar as the proprietor scoffed while cleaning a glass. “It’s a fool’s errand.”

“Why would you… How dare you impugn my offer!” Barion smacked the table he sat at mid-room. Moyra glanced at him resting her chin in the crook of her thumb and finger.

“How dare you try getting the poor lad killed off.” The proprietor smacked his cloth down over the bar with a crack of air.

Sputtering, Barion rose and took two strides toward the bar. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say you wanted to fight.”

Moyra pressed her hand over Barion’s latest applicant, looking at him wide-eyed. He paused in rising from his seat, and Moyra bit her lip as he glanced at her.

“Ivis and Viden came back hale and well trained,” Barion countered. The applicant’s head jerked between Barion and Morya at the drop of the names.

Ivis and Viden. Legends already and if Barion had worked with them… well, Moyra knew his proposition to train carried weight.

“They could see rocks tumbling past!” the proprietor bellowed.

“How do you think Viden earned the name Rock Master!” Barion leaned across the bar.

“Fellows,” the applicant broke in. “Joining the quest is my choice. And I choose.” He smiled reassuringly at Moyra.

Moyra pressed a smile onto her face. “My hero,” she said even as she thought him a fool. Adventures, so eager to rush off. So ready to spend their coin before departing. She’d gladly take his.
