Welcome to Wednesday’s flash fiction wherein I write, as part of a group, a flash fiction based on the same short prompt and post the story.
He laughed in Jess’ face. Especially disconcerting since he laughed in her face. Stop that, she thought. The words bounced around trying gain purchase against his mirth which died as abruptly as it had begun. I don’t joke like that. They’ll think I’m insane. Was she?
Oh please, he thought from some murky corner of her mind. If anything, I’m improving your humor. Besides joyful emotions are hard to contain.
Still not our agreement! When’d she started calling it an agreement? Waking up with an extra consciousness wasn’t something she recalled agreeing to or understanding.
I’ve told you, it was the confluence of electrodes with the–
Stop! STOP shifting through my brain like an archeological dig. Her cheeks reddened as she noted her silent colleagues. They were staring at her again.
“Are you feeling okay, Jess?” Meghan said placing a hand on her shoulder.
“Just a headache.” Jess smiled faintly. “Too much going on in my head.”
“Riiiiight.” John shook his head. “So do you want to join us to catch the new comet cluster–“
Oh pastries! Those look delicious. Her head turned toward a server working the crowd.
She gasped, jerking backward. No, he did. Not her. Hey! Stop moving me.
We have to leave.
But–
Now! She… He? Whoever glanced over her shoulder. There, the silver uniforms. They’d caught up but hadn’t spotted him yet. There was still time to… Jess jerked realizing those were his thoughts leaking through. A voice screamed behind her. They both ran.
