Blending Out

The house dwarfed everything in the street

Wednesday has come around again and I’m happy to present this week’s flash fiction.

Ride shook her head in disbelief. She hadn’t needed to worry about spotting Jamas’ house. Technically, he had followed the restrictions from the Otdun Council. Technically.

The house was not significantly smaller or larger than others, but in style it dwarfed everything on the street. A miniature castle nestled between the Craftsman homes didn’t blend. Please let him have glimmered the dragon practicing loops about the turret.

There was no doorbell. Of course. Ride grabbed the ornate knocker, slamming it down.

Jamas faced the interior as he opened the door. “I told you, not interested in…” He stammered to a halt before resuming tentatively. “Your cookies?”

“Glad to hear it.” Ride ducked under his arm and stepped into the foyer. Quickly she glanced about before the door slammed closed.

“To what do I owe this honor?” Jamas bellowed. Ride turned her head, spotting him slam his hands together.

The thud as she dropped her bag on stone flagstones was pleasing. “Stop trying to hide your company. I’ve already cataloged all the creatures here.”

The smile dropped off his face settling into his customary scowl. “What do you want?”

“Congiua has resurface.” Jamas staged backward thudding into the door as if she’d struck him, instead of speaking in a perfectly flat tone.

“No.” His answer was just as flat. Opening the door, he waved out. “Stop by again.”

“Do I need to tell them about the nymphs?”

Jamas slumped, shoulders drooping. Closing the door, he turned back. “Where do we start?”
