Twigs ground under uncaring boots as the soldiers searched for him. He knew he must keep very still while he waited for them to head home. They’d be wistful for their beds soon.
A horse thudded in and his hopes of early release were dashed. She sat on it, hands clasped regally. She bore all the motivation they lacked. “Burgard, they’re slowing.” It amazed him how much disdain she packed into her words.
“At once.” Burgard was hollering commands before he straightened from his sycophant bow.
Geary sighed. He shouldn’t have borrowed the amulet while her highness was in residence.
